The Graduate School for Social Research (GSSR) of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences educates students in English at the postgraduate level.

We offer  programmes giving the possibility of obtaining a British Masters degree from Lancaster University, as well as individual study programmes leading to a doctorate awarded by the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The School has a strongly international flavour. The majority of our students come from outside Poland, from Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. Courses are taught by visiting lecturers from universities both within and  outside Poland.

Our commitment to international education is also a commitment to achieving the best international standards. GSSR is also the only Polish representative among the 32 institutions in the world eligible to receive students within the Civil Society Leadership Award Scheme. Our partnership with Lancaster University brings us within the scope of the British systems for ensuring academic standards and best practice (see a British MA ). Lancaster University has been named University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 .

Doctoral students are expected to participate in one (or more) of the many research projects of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology as they follow their individual programmes of study. Many of these projects involve international cooperation, such as the POLPAN project in cooperation with Ohio State University, or the Max Planck Partner Group for the Sociology of Economic Life which enables exchange of GSSR students with the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy in Cologne. GSSR research grants are also available for the student’s own research.

The Institute of Philosophy and Sociology was again awarded the highest rating, A+, in the most recent (2017) evaluation by the Polish Ministry for Science and Higher Education’s Committee for Evaluation of Academic Units .

Alumni of the MA and PhD programmes pursue careers in academia, journalism, politics, with NGOs and in business. Their varied professions reflect the interdisciplinary nature of GSSR programmes, the important  skills taught and the wide range of questions addressed in theses and dissertations.

The mission of the Graduate School for Social Research (GSSR) is to promote post-graduate education in accordance with the highest European standards. Our MA and PhD programmes have been developed over the years based on the knowledge and experience of leading scholars from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology...

A School Council advises on School policy. The Council also formulates the curriculum of the  the PhD  programme. An elected student representative attends Council meetings and those of the scientific council of IFiS PAN, of which the School is a part.

Lecturers at the GSSR include researchers from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, scholars from Polish universities and from universities in Australia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the USA.
