The Graduate School for Social Research (GSSR) at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences educates students at the postgraduate level. We offer programmes giving the possibility of obtaining a British Master of Arts degree from Lancaster University, and as well as programmes leading to a doctorate awarded by the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Students who successfully complete our postgraduate programme requirements giving the possibility of obtaining a British Master of Arts degree awarded by Lancaster University are eligible to continue to the School’s PhD programme. They must complete the usual application procedure, but if their application to continue to the PhD is accepted, they enter directly into the second year of doctoral studies.
The GSSR is a part of the Centre of Excellence designated in 2004 by the Polish Government and coordinated by the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It was the first Centre of Excellence in Poland operating in the area of social sciences and humanities.
The Institute of Philosophy and Sociology was awarded the highest rating, A+, in the most recent (2013) evaluation by the Ministry for Science and Higher Education’s Committee for Evaluation of Academic Units.
The Institute contains a Max Planck Partner Group for the Sociology of Economic Life. This partner group enables exchange of GSSR students with the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy in Cologne.
The GSSR is also host to the annual British Alumni Society Scholarships competition giving lyceum students the opportunity to complete their secondary education at leading British boarding schools.
